The sheriff’s office says around 1 p.m., a deputy conducted a traffic stop on Highway 21, near County Road 114.

After noticing the smell of smoke, the deputy found flames coming from the hood of his 2023 Ford Explorer patrol SUV.

The deputy told the driver of the vehicle involved in the traffic stop to drive away to safety.  He reported the fire to Lee County dispatch and removed the ammunition from the SUV while additional units and the Lincoln Volunteer Fire Department responded to the scene to put out the fire.

Lee County Sheriff Garrett Durrenberger said the sheriff’s office is grateful that no one was injured.

  1. I use to own a ford explorer and it had a few issues so we called it the exploder glad no one was hurt quick thinking to get the ammo out or it could have been worse

  2. Glad no one was hurt. Ford is in the process of a recall on some of its motors to be completely replaced due to intake valve failure and this could cause the engine to fail and catch fire. Maybe this was one of those failures?
