TRAFFIC BACKED UP ALONG HIGHWAY 290 WEST AFTER ACCIDENT INVOLVING MULTIPLE 18-WHEELERS

Authorities are at the scene of a major accident this (Friday) morning on Highway 290 West near Red Tip Lane, between Brenham and Burton.

DPS Sergeant Justin Ruiz reports the accident occurred at approximately 8:30 a.m. and involved four 18-wheelers and a Hyundai passenger car.

According to Sgt. Ruiz, the Hyundai was traveling eastbound on Highway 290 when it attempted to stop due to a dog in the road.  The vehicle was then struck by the 18-wheelers, causing a chain-reaction crash.

One of the trucks turned over, causing it to spill its load of rocks and begin leaking oil and diesel.  A HAZMAT crew was called in to clean up the spill.

Three people were transported to Baylor Scott & White in Brenham with minor injuries.

Sgt. Ruiz said the road will be shut down for an extended period of time.  Drivers should plan for delays or attempt to find an alternate route.
