Senate Bill 25 was one of three bills announced during a press conference on Tuesday, the others being SB 314 from Senator Bryan Hughes (R-Mineola) and SB 379 from Senator Mayes Middleton (R-Galveston).

Kolkhorst said the bills are intended to reduce chronic disease and obesity in Texas and help educate citizens about their food and nutrition choices.

SB 25 would expand the amount of time students spend in physical education (P.E.) and not allow students to be restricted from participating in P.E. due to academic performance or behavior.  It would also require nutrition education for physicians and medical students, establish an advisory council to study connections between processed foods and chronic diseases, and mandate new label warnings if a product has ingredients which are banned by Canada, the European Union or the United Kingdom.

SB 314 would prohibit certain chemicals and dyes from being included in free and reduced school lunches.  SB 379 would prevent benefits from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) from being used on items considered “junk food”, removing items like cookies, chips, candy and soda.

The Senate Health and Human Services Committee will hold public hearings today (Wednesday) for SB 25 and SB 314.

  1. This is really great news. Glad to hear it.
The US already has the cheapest food in the world but that does not mean its the food you should be putting in your body or especially in children. No, not everything is tested like it should be thanks to an all powerful food and drug lobby.
Unlike liberal and neoliberal government that sends its citizens to the wolves, our federal and state government finally appear to care.
By the way, the federal government now has a DEI reporting tool, DEI is one of those wolves. https://www.ed.gov/about/news/press-release/us-department-of-education-launches-end-dei-portal

  2. In my opinion, the food that we put in our mouths is the last item that needs to be addressed. We need to start on the front lines which is ;
    A) the unhealthy spraying that has been sprayed in the air that goes into the ground.
    B) what’s in the ground goes into the food.
    C) the chemical additives for flavoring that is put into our foods to create an addiction to that product.
    D) the food coloring that is added so that it “appealing to the eyes”.
    E) the chemicals that is put in or covers the food in which to “extend it shelf expectancy “.
    F) Clean up childhood vaccines. Remove the aluminum, formaldehyde and other chemicals that create problems for the immune system in our children.
    G) lower childhood vaccines required, back down to a reasonable number.

It is many of these things that create the disease and unhealthy weight that Americans have these days.

Take a look at all the foods that the FDA labels okay for consumption, yet…other countries ban.
If one looks at lables of same foods from other countries vs our, youll find the list differs.
That’s very interesting and a tell sign.

    1. Let’s go the other way, what about all of the additives we ban that are approved in other countries? Or simply carry different names. Vaccines are safe and researched, maybe get off RFK’s twitter page and try listening to an actual expert.

  3. Until food costs come down we will continue to have health and obesity problems. Have you ever wondered why low income people are often sicker and heavier than average? Foods filled with sugar and fillers are often cheaper choices.

And how healthy are the school lunches these days? Have you looked at the menus? Every day the choices include lots of breads and always include potatoes!! Children don’t need to eat that much starch every day!!

    1. The school’s feed kids good lunches. If your kids are heavy and unhealthy you should parent up, it’s your responsibility to keep your kids healthy, give them manners and teach them discipline.

      1. My children are grown and make smart choices for themselves and for my grandchildren.

I worked in one of the school cafeterias in Brenham ISD. I think my knowledge of just how nutritional the lunches really are is adequate.

        1. Not a personal attack.
          Just a general statement.
Good parents making smart choices for their kids is my point.
School’s shouldn’t be responsible for taking the place of good parenting.
