The community group called Citizens of Lee County is hosting the meeting on Tuesday at 7 p.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church Family Life Center on FM 1624 in Lincoln.
The meeting, which will be led by Eric Hjorth and Annie Bolognino, will update the public on the group’s efforts to “Stop the Slop” as it pertains to Break It Down LLC’s proposed compost facility on property at Private Road 3264, off of County Road 326.
The first town hall meeting in December drew hundreds of citizens who voiced concerns about the compost facility’s potential impacts to the environment and the community.
Since then, around 2,000 comments and protests were submitted with the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ), and several local government entities, including Washington County and the City of Brenham, have passed resolutions of formal opposition. In addition, Lee County has enlisted a law firm to represent its interests, particularly in enforcing the county’s ordinance that restricts solid waste disposal to certain remote locations.
It is not known whether anyone from the TCEQ or Break It Down will be in attendance at Tuesday’s town hall.
State Senator Lois Kolkhorst and State Representative Stan Gerdes have pushed for the TCEQ to hold a public meeting of its own before making a final decision on Break It Down’s permit application.
