CUBS OPEN DISTRICT WITH AN 8-4 WIN OVER COLLEGE STATION
The Brenham Cub Baseball Team (10-6-1) opened district play with an 8-4 road win over the College Station Cougars last (Tuesday) night. It's the first time that the Cubs have beaten College Station on the Cougars' home field since the 2022 season.
The Cubs got on the board right away with four runs in the top of the first inning. Dalton Hart led it off by drawing a walk. Brody Tucker followed by reaching on an error. Brady Rau came in to courtesy run for Tucker. Then, Drake Bentke slugged an opposite field double that scored Hart with the first run of the game. Cannon Credeur reached on an error by the Cougars, while at the same time Rau and Bentke both scored. Credeur would later come home on an RBI single by Luke Hardy to give Brenham a 4-0 lead. The Cubs ended up batting a round in the first inning.
College Station came back with a run in the bottom of the first to cut the lead to 4-1.
In the top of the second inning, Hart singled. Tucker came up next, and laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Hart to second. Mendoza reached on an error that also allowed Hart to score and increase the Brenham lead to 5-1.
The Cubs tacked on an extra run in the top of the third inning. Luke Hardy led it off with a single, and came around to score on an RBI single by Brody Tucker to give Brenham a 6-1 advantage.
College Station came back with three runs in the bottom of the third inning to cut the Cubs' lead down to 6-4.
Brenham would get two more insurance runs in the top of the seventh inning. After Mendoza singled and Credeur walked, Evan Curtis smashed a two-run double to left to increase the Cub lead to 8-4.
Brayden Steele, who is a sophomore, came on in relief and pitched 4 1/3 scoreless innings, which included striking out the final batter to preserve the win.
