BURTON HERITAGE SOCIETY TO HOST TEXAS RANGER DAY SATURDAY
The Burton Heritage Society’s celebration of the legacy of the Texas Rangers is set for this weekend.
The 14th Annual Texas Ranger Day will take place on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. at the Burton Railroad Depot in downtown.
Steph Jarvis of the Burton Heritage Society, speaking during Tuesday’s KWHI Community Corner, says the event commemorates the founding of the Texas Rangers and honors local Ranger Leander McNelly, while also helping to support the restoration of the historic Mt. Zion Chapel.
Guests will be able to take in Ranger camp life as it was in the 1880s, with numerous historical re-enactments and folk-life demonstrations. There will also be a chuckwagon cooking display, mule-driven buggy rides, shopping at vendors, a silent auction, music from Kountry Chick DJ, the Annie Maud Avis Memorial Chili and Beans Cook-off, and the Lil Mr. and Miss Ranger Contest.
Additionally, this year’s event introduces a drawing to win authentic weaponry, like a commemorative single-action revolver and lever-action rifle. Tickets for the drawing are $50 and further support the Burton Heritage Society. The winner will be announced at 5 p.m. and does not need to be present to win.
Entry to Texas Ranger Day is free. Meal tickets for the chili and beans cook-off are $15 for adults and $10 for children 6-10.
