VEHICLE FIRE, MINOR ACCIDENTS AMONG NINE WEEKEND CALLS FOR BRENHAM FIRE DEPT.
The Brenham Fire Department responded to four calls on Saturday and five on Sunday.
Close to 3:45 p.m. Saturday, firefighters were dispatched for a smoke investigation in the 5600 block of Old Chappell Hill Road. They arrived to find a controlled burn. Due to fire weather conditions, the fire was extinguished. The Chappell Hill Volunteer Fire Department was requested for a water tender. All units then cleared the call.
At 5:30 p.m., BFD members were called out to the 1000 block of Lawndale Avenue for an illegal burning. They made location to find the residents burning a brush pile in the backyard. The fire was put out due to ordinance violations.
Around 6 p.m., the department went out to West Main Street and South Drumm Street for a motorist assist. Upon making location, firefighters found oil on the roadway that came from the motor of the vehicle. They cleaned up the oil before returning to service.
At 6:15 p.m., firefighters responded as mutual aid with the Gay Hill Volunteer Fire Department for a fire investigation at Old Bryan Road and Cedar Hill Road. They arrived and found a grass fire. After extinguishing the fire, they cleared the scene.
On Sunday, approaching 12:15 p.m., BFD personnel were dispatched to the 2600 block of Highway 36 South for a crash with no entrapment. They made location to find a minor accident. All vehicles were able to move to a parking lot nearby, so police released the fire department from the call.
Just before 12:45 p.m., members of the Brenham Fire Department and Berlin Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to a structure fire at Smitty’s Café and Bakery, 4355 Highway 290 West. Units were advised by the caller that there was smoke and a plastic burning smell inside the restaurant. Firefighters determined that the source of the smoke and smell was a burned wire in the air handler for the HVAC system. All units cleared the scene.
At 2:30 p.m., firefighters receive a report of a crash with no entrapment at Highway 290 West and Westpoint Lane. They made location to find a minor accident, with all vehicles involved on the shoulder of the highway. They stayed on scene for traffic control until DPS released the fire department from the call.
Shortly after 6:45 p.m., the department was called out to another crash without entrapment, this one at Highway 290 East and Wonder Hill Road. There, units found a minor accident with all vehicles on the shoulder of the highway. Law enforcement released the department from the scene.
At 10:15 p.m., BFD members responded to a vehicle fire in the 2100 block of Highway 36 North. They made location to find a pickup that was fully involved in the ditch, with the fire extending to the grass. The department used tank water and a hose line to extinguish the fire and remained on scene for traffic control until the vehicle was towed off by a wrecker.
