GLENN HEGAR CONFIRMED AS TEXAS A&M SYSTEM’S NEXT CHANCELLOR
Texas Comptroller Glenn Hegar was unanimously confirmed today (Friday) by the Texas A&M University System Board of Regents to become the system’s next chancellor.
Hegar was named as the sole finalist for the chancellor’s seat on March 7th and will take on the role after the retirement of Chancellor John Sharp on June 30th.
In a release from Texas A&M, Hegar said he is “grateful and honored” to have been entrusted with “leading one of the greatest university systems in the nation.” He said, “Our core values unite us and set the Texas A&M System apart from the others, and I remain steadfastly committed to upholding and preserving those values.”
As chancellor, Hegar will lead the A&M system’s 11 universities and eight state agencies while overseeing a budget of over $7.3 billion.
Hegar, who grew up in Hockley and is a 1993 graduate of Texas A&M, represented the Texas House’s 28th District from 2003 to 2007, followed by the Texas Senate’s 18th District, a seat now held by Lois Kolkhorst, from 2007 to 2014. He was first elected as comptroller in 2014 and won re-election in 2018 and 2022.
