Grimes County Sheriff Don Sowell confirmed that Coulam was found deceased around 9 a.m. today.  Coulam was 87.

Sowell said investigators from his office and the Grimes County District Attorney’s Office responded, and an autopsy will be ordered to determine the cause of death.

Investigation is underway with the sheriff’s office, Todd Mission Police Department and Texas Rangers.  Authorities say there is no suspected danger to the public.

Coulam founded the Texas Renaissance Festival in 1974 and also served for decades as the mayor of Todd Mission.

The Texas Renaissance Festival shared a statement on social media, saying Coulam “built a community that has become a cherished tradition for generations of performers, staff, and guests.”

Coulam’s death comes amid a legal dispute regarding the sale of the festival.  Recently, a judge ordered that Coulam honor the terms of the sale to a group of buyers who alleged he had backed out of a purchase agreement worth $60 million.

KWHI has reached out to the City of Todd Mission for additional information on Coulam’s death.
