Kelton Richardson was presented the $5,000 scholarship at a ceremony at Mt. Rose Missionary Baptist Church.

Richardson is enlisting in the United States Marine Corps.

Scholarship recipients are selected based on academics, service, and spiritual and social engagement.  They must also submit an essay on James Emerson Dennis Jr. and the importance of social activism.

At Brenham High School, Richardson has been active as a member of the Black History Club, MCJROTC, Honor Society and Anchor Club.

Dennis was a lifelong Brenham resident who became a “Freedom Rider” in 1961 during the civil rights movement.  He traveled to Jackson, Mississippi, where he was arrested and charged with breach of peace and spent 40 days in the Mississippi Penitentiary.

During segregation, Dennis was a student at Pickard High School and went on to teach at Brenham High School.  His goal was to establish a Black History Club at the high school.  The scholarship program was established in his memory in 2022.
