GRIMES CO. INMATE WHO ESCAPED FROM AUSTIN HOSPITAL FOUND IN HOUSTON

  

An inmate from Grimes County who escaped last week from a psychiatric hospital in Austin is back in custody.

The Grimes County Sheriff’s Office announced that McArthur Deashy Mathis was taken into custody in Houston around 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.  He was apprehended by members of the U.S. Marshal’s Gulf Coast Violent Offenders and Fugitive Task Force.

Mathis had last been seen around 8 p.m. on May 28th at the Cross Creek Psychiatric and Addiction Hospital, after being taken there on May 21st.  According to the sheriff’s office, he managed to kick open the back door and climb a 6-foot fence.

Mathis was arrested by the Grimes County Sheriff’s Office on January 2nd on multiple warrants out of the Victoria Police Department and local charges including Unlawful Possession of a Firearm by a Felon, Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon Causing Serious Bodily Injury to a Family Member, Obstruction or Retaliation, Deadly Conduct and Burglary of a Habitation.  He is also a registered sex offender.

The Grimes County Sheriff’s Office thanked the Austin Police Department and the Lone Star Fugitive Task Force in Austin for coordinating the search with Grimes County investigators to lead to this arrest.
