ONE DEAD AFTER FIERY WASHINGTON CO. CRASH
Authorities are investigating a fatal two-vehicle accident Thursday afternoon south of Burton that resulted in the death of a Round Top woman.
The crash occurred shortly after 5:30 p.m. at FM 389 and FM 2502.
According to DPS Sergeant Justin Ruiz, a 2016 Ford F-150 was traveling westbound on FM 389, while a 2023 Kia Soul was traveling eastbound. The Ford attempted to make a left turn onto FM 2502 when it got out in front of the Kia, causing the Ford’s front right bumper to strike the Kia’s front left bumper.
Per Sgt. Ruiz, the Kia then caught fire. Witnesses removed the driver from the vehicle, and she was taken to Baylor Scott and White Medical Center in Brenham, where she was pronounced dead. She was identified as 63-year-old Rebecca Mayer of Round Top.
The driver of the Ford was also taken to Baylor Scott and White in Brenham for treatment of minor injuries.
DPS’ investigation of the crash is ongoing.
