CITY OF BRENHAM ALERTING OF POSSIBLE ‘SMART METER’ UTILITY SCAM

The City of Brenham has issued an alert about a possible utility scam, involving an individual or company claiming to perform utility work on behalf of the city.

In a notice this (Tuesday) morning, the city stated that a resident on Timber Oaks Drive recently reported than a person identifying as a representative for a company called ION came to the resident’s home and attempted to install a new “smart meter”.

The individual, according to the city, was not in uniform and did not give official identification.  The resident turned down the service and reported the incident.

The city says it is not conducting any meter upgrades or replacements and has not contracted with any company named ION for such work.

Anyone who is approached by someone claiming to work on behalf of the city or a utility company should ask for identification and contact the city immediately to verify if the activity is legitimate.  They should not allow property access unless they are certain of the individual’s affiliation.

Questions or concerns can be directed to the City of Brenham’s Public Utilities Department at 979-337-7400.
