The International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA) is leading an effort to eliminate the use of certified artificial colors Red 3, Red 40, Green 3, Blue 1, Blue 2, Yellow 5 and Yellow 6 from ice cream and frozen dairy desserts by the end of 2027.

Blue Bell wrote on social media that it is proud to be among the companies committing to eliminate certified artificial colors, adding that many of its products already do not contain them.

Blue Bell also released a list of flavors and snack items without certified artificial colors.  It includes Homemade Vanilla, Dutch Chocolate, Cookies ‘n Cream, Cookie Two Step, Natural Vanilla Bean and Moo-llennium Crunch, along with others.

The company’s pledge comes after the recent passage of state legislation and increased attention at the national level regarding the usage of artificial additives, dyes and chemicals.

In a statement to KWHI, the company said:

“Blue Bell is proactively updating our ice cream recipes to align with evolving state regulations.  This ensures our products can continue to be sold and enjoyed in our 24-state service area—without disruption.  We’re removing certified artificial colors from our products and replacing them with alternatives that meet anticipated regulatory standards.  The taste, texture, and fun of our ice cream will remain the same— the ingredient list is getting a refresh.”
