The City of Brenham today (Monday) announced the appointment of Gary Boshears to the position of police chief.  He is expected to begin his role in mid-August.

Boshears has over 24 years of law enforcement experience, most recently serving as the police chief for the City of Lago Vista, where he began in September 2022.

A release from the City of Brenham says during Boshears’ time in Lago Vista, he led efforts to address staffing shortages, upgraded critical department technology and strengthened community relations.  The city says throughout his career, he has “consistently emphasized transparency, public trust, and community collaboration.”

Before Lago Vista, Boshears was the chief of police for six years in Granite Shoals, following a decade with the police department.

Boshears has earned appointments to the International Association of Chiefs of Police’s Community Policing Committee and the Texas Police Chiefs Association’s Legislative Committee.  He has received a Leadership Command designation and an Executive Certificate in Strategic Leadership.  He holds a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice Administration and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Phoenix, and is pursuing a Doctorate in Strategic Leadership.

Outside of his professional career, Boshears has served as a member of the board of trustees for Marble Falls ISD and the board of the Marble Falls Education Foundation.

Boshears’ appointment comes after the retirement of Lloyd Powell as police chief this past spring.  David Gott has been serving as the interim chief since April.

Mayor Atwood Kenjura says the city is happy to welcome Boshears to its leadership team.  He says, “His impressive track record in law enforcement and commitment to community engagement make him an excellent fit for our city.”

City Manager Carolyn Miller says Boshears was one of over 40 applicants for the police chief position and “stood out as the ideal candidate because of his extensive law enforcement experience, dedication to public service, and deep involvement in the communities he serves.”  She says, “We’re excited for the future of the Brenham Police Department under his leadership.”

The city says it is working on a date for a meet-and-greet.
