BRENHAM CUB FOOTBALL PREVIEW
Expectations are high as the Brenham Cub Football Team prepares for the start of the 2025 season. Last year, the Cubs went 11-2, were undefeated District 10-5A Division II Champions, and made it to the Regional Semifinals. Their season ended with a 28-14 loss to eventual State Champion Richmond Randle.
Head Coach Danny Youngs is returning for his fourth season at the helm, and with a large number of returners from last year's team, he has set the goal of making the trip to AT&T Stadium in December.
One of the biggest battles has been who will be the new starting quarterback. Jordan Harvey graduated in May after two seasons of leading Brenham to back-to-back playoff appearances. Junior Hudson Hartstack and Senior Xyran Upshaw have been competing for the starter's job. Hartstack will get the start against Huntsville, however, Youngs tells KWHI that the battle is not over yet.
With the recent departure of Jakoby Dixon to the John Cooper School, the Cubs will be turning to Sophomore C.J. Glover to be the new starting runningback. Youngs said that Glover has been very impressive, and he thinks Brenham fans will be happy with what they see when the team takes the field on Friday night.
At wide receiver, the Cubs return Seniors Chris Guidry and Cartelle Brown. Guidry is a three-year starter on varsity, while Brown is a four-year starter. They will be joined by Sophomore Nate Rau. Senior Hagen Frank returns as the H-Back.
The offensive line returns four of their five starters from last season. Senior Antonie "Papo" Najera will anchor the line as the starting center. Seniors Caleb Landry and Andre Moijca are going to be the guards. Juniors Aaron Carlile and Dawson Moran return as the starting tackles.
On defense, Senior Mason Seeber and Junior Job Rodriguez will be the defensive tackles, while Seniors Jase Mueller and Doyle Brown man the defensive end spots.
The linebackers will include last season's leading tackler Senior Caleb Espinoza in the middle. He will be flanked by fellow returning starter Senior Kristian Prosper and newcomer Junior Brooks Roznovsky.
The secondary features Juniors Ledrick Walker Jr. and Tre'Lyn Kelly. Junior Quincy Adams is returning at Free Safety, and Junior Ethan Aschenbeck takes over at Strong Safety.
The special teams will once again be handled by Junior Kicker Bleu Cienega and Senior Punter Landon Zelenka.
The Cubs, who are ranked #3 in Class 5A Division II, will open the season tonight (Friday) at 7pm at Cub Stadium against the Huntsville Hornets, who are ranked #8. The teams have developed quite the rivalry over the last two seasons. In 2023, Huntsville won a nailbiter 39-36. Then, last season, Brenham came back with a 39-35 victory.
Huntsville has a new head coach at the helm, Todd Moebes, who comes over from Lockhart.
Last year, the Hornets were 8-4, and they made it to the area round of the playoffs.
Huntsville's offense is led by Sophomore Quarterback Zarien Adolphe, who ended up starting games as freshman last season. Runningback Traeshawn Brown is also back as well.
KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:30pm with Javi Junior and Tommy Lange on the call. It is also Seniors Night at Cub Stadium. They will be honoring the outgoing seniors.
In addition to that, this (Friday) evening is the Green Out Game. Everyone is encouraged to wear their green.
