BRENHAM HERITAGE MUSEUM SPEAKER SERIES PROGRAM TO COVER END OF CIVIL WAR IN TEXAS
The Brenham Heritage Museum will host its next Speaker Series program this month, offering insight into the final days of the Civil War as they unfolded in Texas.
Historian and author Dr. Paul Spellman will present “June, 1865 – The Civil War Ends in Texas” on Tuesday, September 23rd from 6 to 7 p.m. at the museum, located at 105 South Market Street.
Dr. Spellman will share stories and analysis on the tension, uncertainty and transformation that defined June 1865, when the news of the Confederacy’s defeat reached the Lone Star State. Attendees will learn how these events shaped the beginning of Reconstruction and laid the foundation for a new era in Texas and U.S. history.
Dr. Spellman taught for 30 years at the college level, including 25 years at Wharton County Junior College. He has published 14 books on Texas history, both fiction and nonfiction, and is currently working with historian Donaly Brice on a biography of Mathew "Old Paint" Caldwell. Dr. Spellman is now enjoying retirement in Richmond.
A members-only reception before the program will be held at 5:30 p.m., where guests will be able to meet the author and enjoy food and refreshments.
Admission is free for museum members and $10 for non-members. To RSVP, email admin@brenhamheritagemuseum.org.
