CUB FOOTBALL STAYS UNBEATEN WITH WIN OVER KILLEEN
It wasn't pretty, but it was still a win.
The Brenham Cub Football Team walked away with a 15-13 hard fought victory over the Killeen Kangaroos last (Friday) night at Leo Buckley Stadium.
After last year's 73-42 shootout that was won by Brenham, this time it was a defensive game.
Killeen scored an early touchdown to take a 6-0 lead. However, the Cubs blocked the extra point, and Kristian Prosper picked the ball up, and returned it back the other way for a two-point conversion.
That made the score 6-2 Kangaroos.
Brenham scored their first touchdown on a pass from Xyran Upshaw to Cartelle Brown. Bleu Cienega kicked the extra point to give the Cubs a 9-6 lead.
Leading rusher RB C.J. Glover left the game with a shoulder injury after just three carries for 14 yards. Xyran Upshaw ended up leading the offense with 27 carries for 75 yards. Ledrick Walker Jr. chipped in with seven carries for 45 yards.
In the second half, Killeen recovered a Cub fumble and returned it for a touchdown to take a 13-9 lead.
After his historic performance last week, the Kangaroos shutout Chris Guidry for the majority of the game. Guidry finally made his first and only catch late in the fourth quarter, and it turned out to be the most important one.
On Brenham's final drive, with the game on the line, a false start penalty by the Cubs turned a 4th down and 7 into a 4th down and 12 at the Kangaroos' 33-yard line with 1:34 left in the game.
The Cubs needed to get the first down, or they were looking at their first loss of the season.
Upshaw heaved the pass into the air, and Guidry made an incredible leaping catch over two defenders, and bulled his way past them, as well as a third defender, into the end zone for the game winning touchdown. Cienega missed the extra point, but it didn't matter as Brenham held on for the 15-13 win.
The Cubs' defense came up big in the second half holding Killeen to just 46 yards of total offense (25 rushing and 21 passing). Doyle Brown had two huge sacks, while Jrius Booker added one as well.
Brenham (4-0) now gets ready for their final non-district game next week as they make the long road trip to Lobo Stadium in Longview to face off with Gilmer. The opening kickoff is scheduled for 7pm. KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:30pm.
