night.

The Brenham Fire Department was called out around 11:30 p.m. for a structure fire at the two-story building, located at 506 South Austin Street.  The department reported heavy smoke coming from the roof of the structure.

The fire was extinguished on the second floor of the building.  Additional units from other fire departments were dispatched to assist with manpower, salvage operations to preserve property within the building, and locating and extinguishing any remaining hot spots.

Additional responding agencies included City of Brenham Utilities, the Brenham Police Department, Washington County EMS, and the Salem, Chappell Hill and Meyersville Volunteer Fire Departments.

A release from the City of Brenham this (Thursday) morning said city staff has secured the site, and the Texas Municipal League will investigate to determine the cause of the fire.

The top floor of the facility houses the City of Brenham Gas Department, while the bottom floor is for the Maintenance Department.  Caution tape remained around the building this morning as members of the Brenham Fire Department continued their investigation and worked to determine the extent of the damage.

Brenham Mayor Atwood Kenjura said, “The quick action of our fire department and the support from neighboring volunteer departments helped contain the fire and prevent further damage.  We are grateful for their quick and professional response.”

The call was one of three for the Brenham Fire Department on Wednesday.

Around 1:45 p.m., units went out for a report of a structure fire at a home in the 700 block of Pecan Street.  They made location to find the resident was having issues with their HVAC system.

At 3:45 p.m., members of the Brenham Fire Department and the Chappell Hill and Meyersville Volunteer Fire Departments responded for a smoke investigation in the 6600 block of Gibbs Creek Road.  While enroute, firefighters saw a large column of smoke and upgraded the call to an active grass fire.  When they arrived, they determined the fire, which was in a thick, wooded area, was small and had already been partially extinguished by the electric company on site.  Crews used hand tools and water to extinguish the fire and mop up the scene.
