WASHINGTON CO. COMMISSIONERS APPROVE ‘ADOPT A ROAD’ PROGRAM

Washington County Commissioners are launching a program to help keep county roadways clean.

The court on Monday approved the Adopt a County Road program, which allows members of the public to volunteer to clean adopted sections of roadway across the county by picking up litter, trash and unwanted items.

Commissioner Misti Hartstack Corn said she has been working with County Engineer Wesley Stolz for months to get this program going, and she is excited to help keep the county beautiful.

Stolz said it can be costly to pull county employees off of their assigned jobs to engage in cleanup, so he believes the program will be quite a positive for the county.

Through the program, citizen volunteers fill out an agreement that outlines the parameters they will need to follow.  Groups that agree to adopt a county road must do so for a minimum of two years and for a section of roadway at least two miles long.  They must also clean the adopted section at least twice a year.

The county will provide safety vests, trash bags and safety literature.  It will also work with volunteers to determine the specific section of county road right-of-way to be adopted and put up a sign at each end of the adopted section to display the group’s name.

Also at Monday’s meeting, commissioners approved the 2024-25 school lands report and disbursed funding to Brenham and Burton ISDs, through revenue obtained from hunting and grazing leases from Washington County’s school land in Tom Green County.  The funding goes into the school districts’ general funds and is split up based on their average daily attendance.

Brenham ISD will receive $295,268, and Burton ISD will get $41,028.  The county is requesting each district send a portion of the funds back – $72,342 for Brenham ISD and $10,052 for Burton ISD – for the purpose of continued maintenance of the Tom Green County land.

In other business, the court:

  • Authorized the county auditor to advertise and solicit sealed bids for a roof overlay project at the Washington County Jail, in accordance with applicable county purchasing requirements.  Bids will be due to the county by December 4th
  • Approved a job description for chief of staff.
  • Approved a subdivision variance request for a land division fronting FM 912, consisting of 15.06 acres in Precinct 1.
  • Approved a final plat for the Windmill Ridge subdivision located along FM 2193, consisting of 41 lots in Precinct 1.
  • Approved a subdivision variance request for a land division fronting Hohenwalde School Road, consisting of 72.61 acres in Precinct 4.
  • Approved a construction and drainage easement between the county and John Mikeska III for a drainage project along Dierking Road in Precinct 2.
  • Agreed to accept and add Sunflower Lane (0.294 miles) and Primrose Lane (0.223 miles), located in the Brenham Hills subdivision in Precinct 2, into the county road system.

Commissioners will meet again on Friday for a special session to canvass the results from the Texas Constitutional Amendment Election on November 4th.  The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Washington County Courthouse.
