The Brenham City Council on Thursday congratulated Brenham Animal Services on earning designation from Best Friends Animal Society as a no-kill shelter. The title means the shelter exceeds a 90 percent save rate for dogs and cats.
City Secretary Jeana Bellinger said the team members at Brenham Animal Services have reinvented the shelter and called this “a great accomplishment for them and a milestone for the city.”
Reviewing Fiscal Year 2025 statistics, Bellinger said the shelter has cared for 791 animals and facilitated adoptions for 783 of them. The shelter’s two animal control officers have responded to 733 animal-related calls, and staff members have distributed 135 microchips.
Additionally, Brenham Animal Services has brought on a veterinarian to handle pets’ medical issues in-house and rolled out various volunteer, foster and community wellness programs like Doggy Day Out, the Spay/Neuter Assistance Program and the Trap-Neuter-Release Program for feral cats.
Animal Services Manager Megan Gray lauded the dedication and work ethic of the team members who serve alongside her, saying this recognition would not be possible without them.
The Best Friends Animal Society network consists of thousands of public and private shelters, rescue groups and other animal welfare organizations with a mission to save the lives of homeless dogs and cats.
Brenham Mayor Atwood Kenjura commended Gray and her staff on a “job well done”, adding, “You’ve changed the face of our shelter.”
