BURTON SCHOOL BOARD TO VOTE ON SCHOOL LIBRARY MATERIAL SELECTION

The Burton School Board will continue talks and possibly act on Monday on Burton ISD’s library materials.

Trustees will consider a resolution regarding parental rights, vote on the district’s library materials selection process, and potentially authorize the purchase of library books and materials.

In October, the board discussed recent legislative changes stemming from Senate Bill 12 and Senate Bill 13 from the 89th Legislative Session, which are an extension of House Bill 900 from the 88th Legislature.  The new laws pertain to parental rights in education and what is allowed to be included in public school libraries.

In other legislation-related items, the board will review information from Senate Bill 546 from the 89th Legislature, which requires school systems to gradually work toward equipping school buses with three-point seat belts.

Later, board members will consider a resolution disapproving a budget amendment adopted by the Washington County Appraisal District Board of Directors.

Chief Appraiser Dyann White said the appraisal district has approximately $310,870 in surplus fund balance and is seeking to utilize it for purposes including office renovation; replenishing the fleet, computer hardware replacement, and legal funds; and updating the appraisal district website with videos for taxpayer education.  The school board can choose to reject the budget amendment, and if a majority of local taxing entities do so, the appraisal district can either propose a different amendment or refund the money to each taxing unit by percentage of their total levy.

An executive session will be held for personnel matters and for consultation with an attorney regarding the district’s lawsuit against DSA, Inc. and Circle H Dirt Work and Excavation, LLC, Cause No. 38478 in 21st District Court.  After the executive session, trustees will consider a resolution to potentially propose terminating a probationary contract for good cause for “failure to meet the accepted standards of conduct for educators.”

The board will meet Monday at 6 p.m.  Trustees are returning to meeting in the Burton ISD Cafeteria, now that the facility has re-opened for use.
