Continuing our look at the county judge’s race, today’s preview is with Kirk Hanath, who is running against Douglas Cone and Brad Tegeler for the position held by John Durrenberger, who is not seeking re-election.

Hanath has held the role of Precinct 3 County Commissioner since first being elected in 2004.

Hanath says a priority for the county must be ensuring that it properly plans for and manages growth.  He says the commissioners court has laid the foundation for that growth, through avenues such as a master plan for a new judicial center and improvements at the Expo grounds, a new countywide strategic plan to guide various other projects, and strong fiscal standing to support versatility with those initiatives.

Hanath says the county has heard constituents’ desire for better communication and has taken steps to rebuild the county’s website, utilize TextMyGov software and hire a chief of staff to assist with communicating with the public via social media, news media and direct outreach.

Hanath says his experience on the commissioners court and his focus on building professional relationships offers the opportunity for a seamless transition for the county judge’s position.

KWHI is asking each candidate questions about what they consider to be the main responsibilities of the office they are pursuing, some of the main challenges the county faces, how they plan to improve functions of the county, and what they feel sets them apart as a candidate.

Early voting opens on Tuesday, February 17th.  Election Day is Tuesday, March 3rd
