The Dr. Wilfred Dietrich Speaker Series, kicking off in February, will feature a distinguished lineup of historians who will lead presentations on Texas history, Washington County, and the people and events that shaped the region.  The museum says the series will honor Dr. Dietrich’s “enduring legacy of scholarship, service, and community engagement.”

Dr. Dietrich, who passed away in 2019, was a lifelong educator, historian and civic leader who helped shape the cultural landscape of Brenham and Washington County through his passion for preserving local history.

In addition to helping found the Brenham Heritage Museum, Dr. Dietrich served for many years as chair of the Washington County chapter of the Texas Historical Commission, during which time the county received more than 20 distinguished service awards.  Along with his wife, Bobbie, he engaged with residents and visitors through marker projects, living-history events and public programs.

The Speaker Series programs will be held at the museum from 6 to 7 p.m., with a members-only reception at 5:30 p.m. on the museum’s main floor.  Food and refreshments will be provided.

Planned speakers include:

  • Friday, February 27 – “The Texas Lowcountry” by Dr. John R. Lundberg
  • Monday, March 23 – “Washington-on-the-Brazos in the Civil War” by Richard B. McCaslin
  • Thursday, April 30 – “German History in Washington County” by Dr. Walter Buenger
  • Thursday, June 11 – “The Story of Spindletop: 1901-2026” by Dr. Paul Spellman
  • July (date to be announced) – Dr. Richard B. McCaslin, topic to be determined

Admission is free for museum members and $15 for non-members.  Payment can be made at the door.
