Back on January 6, the Brenham Cub Basketball Team lost to the Huntsville Hornets 60-47 on the road. Since then, they have been waiting for a chance at payback. Last (Friday) night, they got it.

The Cubs defeated the district front-running Hornets 47-45 at the Brenham High School Gym. For Brenham, it was their fifth straight win.

The game got off to a slow start in the first quarter with Brenham leading 9-8 at the end of the period.

It picked up in the second quarter with the Cubs outscoring Huntsville 14-10, which gave them a 23-18 advantage at halftime.

In the second half, the Hornets outscored Brenham 14-13, to make it a 36-32 game going into the fourth quarter.

The fourth quarter was a nailbiter with both teams trading leads back and forth over the final three minutes.

With Huntsville leading 45-44, Quincy Adams made a layup with 15 seconds left to put Brenham up 46-45. After the Cubs got a stop on defense, Adams was fouled with 7.1 seconds left in the game, and went to the free throw line. He sank one of two shots to make it 47-45.

Huntsville had one last chance, but the Brenham defense got another stop, and held on for the win.

Jayden Hebert led the way for the Cubs with 23 points, while Adams finished with 14 points.

Hebert, a senior, was honored after the game for reaching 1,000 points scored in his high school playing career. He is a three-year starter for Brenham.

With the loss, the Hornets drop into a three-way tie for first place with Lake Creek and A&M Consolidated. Meanwhile, the Cubs are in fourth place, but they are now only one game out of first place.

Next up, Brenham will be going on the road to face A&M Consolidated on Tuesday night at 6:30pm.
