BURTON SCHOOL BOARD EXTENDS SUPT. CURRY’S CONTRACT, ADOPTS 2026-27 CALENDAR
The Burton School Board agreed after an executive session on Monday to extend the contract of Superintendent Vikki Curry.
The extension is for one year and does not include a change in salary. Curry was originally hired to a three-year contract in June 2024 at an annual salary of $130,000.
Prior to Burton, Curry had served since 2021 as the assistant superintendent for teaching and learning in Galveston ISD. She also held roles as a teacher in Galveston ISD, an assistant principal in Spring ISD and a principal and assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in Coldspring-Oakhurst CISD.
The board also approved one-year contract extensions for the two-year contracts of the elementary and secondary campus principals and assistant principals, business manager, athletic director and special education director. Action was tabled on the contracts for human resources coordinator, operations coordinator and child nutrition director.
In regular session on Monday, trustees adopted Burton ISD’s instructional calendar for the 2026-27 school year.
The new calendar will welcome students back to class after the summer on Wednesday, August 12th. Students will have off September 16-18 for the county fair and November 23-27 for Thanksgiving. Class will release early on December 18th for the holidays, with school resuming on January 6, 2027.
Spring Break will be March 8-12, 2027. The last day of school will be May 20, 2027 with graduation on May 21, 2027.
The board also gave authorization to increase the district’s “micro-purchase” threshold for purchases that do not need board approval. The threshold was raised from $15,000 to $25,000.
In other business, the board:
- Signed off on the purchase of CTE computer equipment not to exceed $35,000.
- Approved an order of school board election for the positions currently held by Dean Fuchs, Misty Lucherk and Donna Putnam for May 2, 2026. Friday is the last day to file for a place on the election ballot. Thus far, only the three incumbents have filed.
- Approved a resolution related to the compensation of teachers and staff due to the winter weather event.
- Reviewed bus quotes and discussed financing options for ongoing maintenance expenditures.
