Deramus, whose last day with the county is March
1st as he moves into a new position with the Texas
Division of Emergency Management, was
recognized for his service at Tuesday's county
commissioners meeting.
County Judge John Durrenberger opened Tuesday’s meeting – Deramus’ last one with the county – by thanking him for his decades of service with the county and wishing him well in his new role as Region 8 Section Chief with the Texas Division of Emergency Management.
Deramus began his career with EMS in 1994 as a paramedic, working his way up to director of the agency in 2006.
Durrenberger said Deramus has had “a profound impact on Washington County” and that he will be missed in this role, but the county is confident that the state is gaining an experienced emergency management leader.
Durrenberger said the EMS Department under Deramus’ direction has evolved into an “innovative, industry-leading, patient-driven medical organization”, creating new substations around the county, launching an air ambulance service, and beginning development on a rural clinic in Burton. He also commended Deramus’ guidance through various disasters, including floods, hurricanes, winter storms and COVID-19. Additionally, he said Deramus has embodied servant-leadership by putting others first, whether that be his team members, his patients or the citizens of Washington County.
Following a standing ovation from those in attendance, Deramus was brief with his own words. He joked that commissioners have heard enough from him over the years, but he said he was very appreciative of the opportunity to serve.
Deramus’ final day with EMS will be Sunday, March 1st.
