BURTON BASEBALL WINS TWO ON OPENING DAY OF THE BURTON TOURNAMENT
The Burton Panther Baseball Team opened up the Burton Tournament with a pair of wins on Thursday. In the first game, the Panthers defeated the Brenham Cub JV 6-5.
The Cub JV jumped out to the early lead with two runs in the top of the second. Brenham loaded bases on a single by Taylor Brier, then Dane Weidemann was hit by a pitch, and Kai Ongudu walked. Cooper McIntyre brought home Brier on a sacrifice fly to make it 1-0 Cubs. Weidemann would later score on a bases loaded walk to Chet Eckert, which made it 2-0 Brenham.
The Cub JV got on the scoreboard again in the top of the third. Briley Jasinski reached on a walk, and came in on a two-run homer by Slade Godfrey. That put Brenham ahead 4-0.
Burton came back with three runs in the top of the third inning to make it a one-run game 4-3. Logun Tosta and Braydon Martin drew back-to-back walks. Easton Witt came in the game to courtesy run for Martin. Rueben Rodriguez singled home Tosta. Ryder Biggs reached on an error that allowed Witt to score. Rodriguez later scored on a sacrifice fly by Eli Jaeger.
Brenham would get one more run in the top of the fourth inning. Cale Wall got the inning started with a double. Eckert bunted him to third. Then, Wall scored when Cooper Plagens hit into a fielder's choice. That gave the Cub JV a 5-3 lead.
The Panthers finally took the lead by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fourth inning to make it 6-5. Logun Tosta reached on an error, stole second and third, and scored on a passed ball.
Burton then drew three straight walks to Martin, Rodriguez, and Ryder Biggs. Witt came in to run for Martin. Eli Jaeger followed by hitting a two-run single that scored Witt with the tying run, and Rodriguez with the go-ahead run.
Jaeger pitch a scoreless fifth to preserve the win.

In the final game of the day, the Burton Panthers would defeat the Weimar Wildcats 13-5 in a game that lasted just three and a half innings.
After Weimar got on the board with a run in the top of the first, the Panthers responded with five runs in the bottom of that inning. Logun Tosta got it started by drawing a walk, stealing second, advancing to third on a passed ball, and scoring on an RBI single by Rueben Rodriguez to tie it 1-1. Braydon Martin drew a walk, and Carter Prigge came in to run for him. Ryder Biggs singled, and then on an error Prigge and Rodriguez both came around to score. Biggs later scored on an RBI single by Isaac Matthies. Eli Jaeger walked and rounded out the scoring by coming home on a passed ball, which put Burton up 5-1.
The Wildcats added another run in the top of the second inning to cut the Burton lead down to 5-2.
The Panthers busted the game open with four more runs in the bottom of the second inning. Tosta walked, and rode home on an RBI triple by Martin. Rodriguez singled in Martin to increase the lead to 7-2.
Jaeger hit an RBI single to scored Rodriguez. He later scored on a passed ball, which made it 9-2 in favor of Burton.
Weimar came up with three runs in the top of the third inning to cut the lead to 9-5.
Burton added four more runs in the bottom of the third to put the game away. Coy Gurka got the inning started with a triple, and then Tyler Witt was hit by a pitch, and stole second. Tosta brought them both home on a two-run single.
Tosta stole second, and came in to score when Martin reached on an error. Prigge courtesy ran for Martin, and scored the final Burton run on an RBI single by Jaeger.
