BURTON SCHOOL BOARD TO VOTE ON FIRST AMENDMENT RESOLUTION

Burton ISD trustees will consider a resolution on Monday regarding First Amendment rights.

Senate Bill 11, passed during the 2025 legislative session, allows school boards to adopt a policy requiring campuses to provide students and employees with an opportunity to participate in a period of prayer and reading of the Bible or other religious text.

The Brenham School Board voted during its last meeting to reaffirm Brenham ISD’s commitment to First Amendment rights of students and employees and outline its decision to continue operating under existing law, rather than adopt an additional statutory resolution.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the Burton School Board will review competitive bids and vendor selection for the 2021 bond construction project.  Later, it will vote on a resolution authorizing the issuance of obligations designated as Burton ISD Series 2026 maintenance tax notes.  Another resolution to be taken up will establish the district’s intent to reimburse itself for the expenditure of funds relating to constructing and equipping district improvements from the proceeds of tax-exempt obligations.  There will also be a resolution for an engagement agreement for bond counsel legal services with Cantu Harden Montoya LLP.

In other business, trustees will:

  • Consider a prekindergarten tuition rate for 2026-27.
  • Approve an order to cancel the May 2nd trustee election.  All three incumbents – Dean Fuchs, Misty Lucherk and Donna Putnam – are unopposed.
  • Vote on Credit by Examination (CBE) procedures.
  • Hold an executive session to discuss employee contracts and the district’s pending litigation against DSA, Inc. and Circle H Dirt Work and Excavation, LLC in 21st Judicial District Court, Cause No. 38478.  Action is expected after the executive session on teacher and counselor contracts.

The board will meet Monday at 6 p.m. in the Burton ISD Cafeteria.
