WASHINGTON-ON-THE-BRAZOS CELEBRATES 190TH ANNIVERSARY OF TEXAS INDEPENDENCE

The birthplace of Texas welcomed large crowds on Saturday to celebrate the 190th anniversary of the signing of the Texas Declaration of Independence.

The Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site hosted its first full Texas Independence Day celebration since completing an over $50 million renovation project.

Visitors were treated to historical re-enactments, demonstrations and performances.  They were also able to walk through the improvements across the site, including the new Washington townsite experience, learning what life was like in the town and about its role in the Republic of Texas.

Historic Site Manager Jon Failor said the Washington-on-the-Brazos Historical Foundation and Texas Historic Commission are proud of the work done to renew this cherished landmark.

State Senator Lois Kolkhorst said it is a privilege to be able to celebrate Texas’ beginnings on hallowed grounds, honoring those who gave up their lives to achieve freedom.

Improvements to the historic site were funded with over $40 million in state appropriations over multiple legislative sessions.  Upwards of $11 million was raised by the Historical Foundation through donations.
