BURTON SCHOOL BOARD SELECTS REPLACEMENT CONTRACTOR FOR BOND PROJECT

The Burton School Board on Monday agreed to move forward with a contractor to finish out bond construction work from a previous contractor.

Trustees accepted the proposal of Mercer Construction for the fire water loop domestic water system in an amount not to exceed $615,000.

Weaver and Jacobs Constructors Project Manager Ryan Malinovsky explained that Mercer Construction would be completing work that Boothe Construction defaulted on.

The board also approved a resolution to authorize the issuance of obligations designated as Series 2026 maintenance tax notes.  Superintendent Vikki Curry said the intent is to fund necessary equipment and infrastructure, including school buses and other approved capital expenditures, in a structured and fiscally responsible manner.

Other resolutions were passed to approve an engagement agreement with Cantu Harden Montoya LLP for bond counsel legal services and to establish the district’s intent to reimburse itself for prior lawful expenditures of funds related to construction, from the proceeds of tax-exempt obligations.

In other business, trustees considered a resolution stemming from Senate Bill 11, passed during the 2025 legislative session, that allows school boards to adopt a policy designating time for students and employees to pray or read the Bible or other religious text.  The board opted to approve a resolution to continue with the district’s current procedures.  Curry said the school district already provides a moment of silence and feels that additional time taken away from education is “not in the best interest of all students.”

Additionally, the board:

  • Approved Burton ISD’s credit by exam process, utilizing the University of Texas as a provider.  The process allows students to demonstrate proficiency in grade level or course content by scoring highly on a special assessment.
  • Approved the district’s prekindergarten tuition rate for 2026-27, using the current rate.
  • Cancelled the May 2nd school board election.  All three incumbents – Dean Fuchs, Misty Lucherk and Donna Putnam – are unopposed.
  • Approved teacher and counselor contracts following an executive session.
