TxDOT SEEKING FEEDBACK ON UPDATED MEDIAN PROPOSALS FOR SOUTH DAY STREET, HIGHWAY 36
Officials from TxDOT invited Brenham residents on Thursday to receive new information and provide feedback about a project to reconfigure the medians along South Day Street and Highway 36 South.
The public meeting at the Blinn College Student Center showcased plans to extend the medians on South Day Street north of Highway 290 and on Highway 36 south of Highway 290. The existing medians would be extended by an additional 555 feet to the north and 660 feet to the south, with left-turn locations providing access to businesses.

Bob Colwell, Public Information Officer for TxDOT’s Bryan District, said the project’s intent is to improve traffic flow, reduce congestion and eliminate conflict points that can lead to crashes.

TxDOT's plans to reconfigure medians on South Day
Street and Highway 36 South.
TxDOT has revised its concepts since last showing plans for the project to the Brenham City Council in December. The previous design allowed northbound traffic on Day Street to turn left into the H-E-B parking lot, but it did not allow southbound traffic the ability to turn into businesses on the left-hand side of the road. The new proposal provides for a dedicated left-turn lane for southbound traffic, but northbound traffic wanting to enter H-E-B would need to travel past the medians and turn around, or turn in from the Highway 290 feeder road. There were no changes to the proposed median design on Highway 36.
The initial median plans unveiled in November 2023 only focused on South Day Street and had the medians running as far north as Stone Street, but the project scope was adjusted after public feedback and further TxDOT evaluation.
TxDOT – Bryan District Planning Engineer Juan Quiroz said construction is expected to start in the spring of 2027 and last for a few months, with some traffic control required.
The project is estimated to cost $850,000 - $900,000. No right-of-way acquisition is anticipated.
The plans are available to view at www.txdot.gov.
Public comments on the project are encouraged. They can be submitted by mail to the TxDOT Bryan District Office or by email to BRY_PublicComment@txdot.gov. All comments must be received by Monday, April 6th in order to be included in the official public meeting record.
