CUB BASEBALL CLINCHES PLAYOFF BERTH WITH 5-2 WIN OVER MONTGOMERY
The Brenham Cub Baseball Team needed just one more win to clinch a playoff spot and they got it last (Tuesday) night by beating Montgomery on the road 5-2.
Luke Hardy went the distance to get the victory on the mound. Over seven innings, he threw 110 pitches, giving up five hits, two runs, only one was earned, three walks, and seven strikeouts.
The Cubs got on the board first. In the top of the third inning, Owen Finke drew a one-out walk, stole second, and scored on an RBI single by Ethan Aschenbeck to give Brenham a 1-0 lead.
Montgomery came back with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning and one run in the bottom of the fifth inning to take a 2-1 lead.
The Cubs got their biggest inning in the top of the sixth, where they put up four runs. Brayden Steele drew a walk to lead off the inning, and later scored on an RBI single by Brooks Roznovsky, which tied it at 2-2. Dalton Hart drew a walk, and Finke cleaned off the bases with a two-run triple to give Brenham a 4-2 lead. Bentke would then single in Finke to extend the advantage to the Cubs, 5-2.
After that, Brenham held on for the win. The Cubs are 18-8-1 overall, and 9-0 in district. Due to the weather concerns, the second game of the series will now be on Thursday night. They are going to play at 7pm at Fireman's Park. KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:35pm on 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com.
If the Cubs win, they can clinch at least a share of the district title.
