collaboration.
Washington County is joining a nationwide collaboration as part of the United States’ 250th anniversary celebration.
Washington County Commissioners on Tuesday read a proclamation in support of the Washingtons Unite initiative, where counties across the country named for George Washington will contribute individual quilt squares to a collectively assembled, handcrafted quilt.
Kathy Doran, president of the Friendship Quilt Guild of Brenham, said the quilt guild is honored to be able to create something to represent Texas’ Washington County and be part of this “monumental” project.

According to Doran, the quilt guild’s design will represent the shape of Texas with the colors of the state flag. It will be highlighted with a star where Washington County is located and will be embroidered across the bottom with “Birthplace of Texas”.
In the United States, there are 30 Washington Counties and one Washington Parish.
Doran said the pieces of the quilt are being put together this weekend and will hit the road in July. The hope is for the quilt to arrive locally in June 2027.
