WASHINGTON CO. JAIL SEEING REDUCTION IN AVERAGE DAILY INMATE POPULATION

Washington County Sheriff Trey Holleway shares
sheriff's office statistics for the month of March at
Tuesday's county commissioners meeting.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Office is reporting a decline in the average daily population of inmates at the county jail.

During Sheriff Trey Holleway’s report for the month of March at commissioners court on Tuesday, he informed commissioners that the monthly average of inmates residing in the jail has fallen from 99 in January, to 94 in February, to 89 in March.

Holleway said that average is “as low as it’s been in a while,” and that while arrest numbers month over month remain comparable, those who are being booked in are departing the jail sooner.

April as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention
Month.

According to Holleway, the county has to spend roughly $100 a day per inmate for housing, meals, utilities and safety, though the cost can fluctuate depending on individual needs such as medication.

Holleway noted that while the county does see cost benefits with inmates leaving sooner, if it is in the best interest of the community to keep an offender in jail, he said “we have a place for them.”

Holleway also announced that several staff vacancies are expected to be filled soon, as four police academy cadets plan to graduate in June.

In other business, commissioners:

  • Received a quarterly report from the EMS Department and monthly reports from the county and district clerks, justices of the peace, auditor, tax assessor-collector, treasurer, constables, elections, and veterans service office.
  • Approved the usage of the emergency management seminars, dues and mileage account for travel expenses associated with in-person interviews for applicants for the fire services director position.
  • Approved an updated memorandum of agreement with Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – College Station for EMS blood product services, replacing the March 19, 2019 agreement.
  • Adopted a resolution reaffirming the official courthouse steps as the designated location for public tax sales, public tax resales, and all authorized constable sales in Washington County.  The resolution also approved an alternative location at the Washington County Courthouse Annex and authorized constables and deputy constables to conduct all such sales in accordance with Texas law.
  • Read a proclamation declaring the month of April as Sexual Assault Awareness and Prevention Month.
