CUB BASEBALL SEASON ENDS WITH GAME 3 LOSS TO PNG
What has been an incredible year for Brenham Cub Baseball came to an end on Saturday afternoon in Crosby. The Port Neches-Groves Indians took an early lead and never looked back as they won the third and deciding game 15-5 in six innings. With that win, they also clinched their Best of Three Area Round series 2-1.
The Indians jumped on Brenham starter Brayden Steele for six runs in the top of the first inning. They sent ten batters to the plate in the frame. The big hit was a three-run triple by PNG catcher Logan Asebado.
The Cubs got one of the runs back in the bottom of the first inning. Drake Bentke drew a two-out walk, and later came around to score on an RBI single by Brody Tucker, which cut the Indian lead to 6-1.
In the top of the second inning, PNG got the run back on an RBI single by Casen Burnham that scored Mason West to make it a 7-1 game.
Brenham scored their second run in the bottom of the second inning. Steele walked, and Nate Rau came into the game as a courtesy runner. Rau later scored on an RBI groundout by Ethan Aschenbeck. However, the Indians still led 7-2.
PNG busted the game wide open with four runs in the top of the third. That put the game almost at the mercy rule at 11-2.
The Cubs had their biggest offensive output in the game during the bottom of the fifth inning. Aschenbeck and Bentke reached base on doubles. Luke Hardy, then came up and smashed a three-run homer to cut the lead to 11-5, and give Brenham some hope.
Howver, the Indians came back with four runs in the top of the sixth to put the run-rule into effect.
In the bottom of the sixth inning, Blue Cienega reached on a single. However, PNG pitcher Blake Brashers got Aschenbeck on a pop-up to end the game.
The Cubs finished the season with a 24-13-1. They were District and Bi-District Champions.
It was also the final game in a Brenham uniform for a large senior class, whose presence on the field at Fireman's Park will be missed next season.
