MAN CONVICTED IN WALLER CO. MURDER SENTENCED TO LIFE IN PRISON

A man convicted of using a box cutter to kill a Brookshire resident has been sentenced to life in prison.

Ronald Brandyburg received the life sentence on Thursday in 506th Judicial District Court before Judge Gary Chaney.

Brandyburg was convicted by a Waller County jury on April 18th for the January 14, 2020 murder of Clifford Richard by using a box cutter to cut the victim’s neck.

The jury’s verdict came after four days of evidence and less than 30 minutes of deliberation.

Members of the jury heard from three eyewitnesses to the murder, a paramedic who treated and transported Richard, a medical examiner from the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences, a former Brookshire Police Department officer, Texas Ranger Jeffrey Wolf and Dr. Michael Arambula.

The Waller County District Attorney’s Office said the defense sought to offer mental health evidence, but it was ultimately deemed irrelevant, as it was determined to not affect the defendant’s ability to know right from wrong.  Further, the DA’s Office argued that the defendant’s flat affect while committing the act was not a sign that he was not aware of what he was doing, but rather an indication of his dangerousness.

District Attorney Sean Whittmore said, “The road to justice is sometimes long, but my office will continue to fight for victims of senseless violence.”  He also said, “There is no mitigating what Ronald Brandyburg did, there is nothing that can bring Clifford Richard back.  Life in prison was the only acceptable sentence.”
