WASHINGTON CO. 4-H PARTICIPATES IN SUMMER AG TOUR

  

Washington County 4-H members explored the world of hay production on Friday during the annual Summer Ag Tour. 

The tour took 4-H members to the Mikolajchak Hay Farm.  The group learned from Keith Mikolajchak and Mitchell Stephens about different grasses, including Johnson, Tipton, coastal, and types of Bermuda.

Students also gained knowledge about the various factors involved in successful hay production, such as cost of production, control methods, equipment, transportation and weather.  The tour ended with a pork sandwich lunch.

Washington County Farm Bureau President Larry Winkelmann said hay production is vital to the county, and that 4-H exhibitors all use hay.  Extension Agents Kailyn Capps and Kyle Despain said this was a meaningful tour for the students. 

The summer tour has been sponsored for decades in and around the county by Texas A&M AgriLife Extension and Washington County Farm Bureau.
