CUB FOOTBALL DEFEATS PN-G TO IMPROVE TO A 4-0 START TO THE SEASON

If there were any doubts about this year's Brenham Cub Football Team, they erased them with a 45-14 win over the Port Neches-Groves Indians on Friday night.

The Cubs were trailing at one point 14-7 with just a little over six minutes left in the second quarter, and they came back with 38 unanswered points to win it.

The first quarter was a defensive battle with PN-G scoring the only touchdown on a pass from QB Jake Ashworth to TE Kane Romero. After the extra point, the Indians led 7-0 at the 2:10 mark.

Brenham used a trick play in the second quarter to tie the game. C.J. Glover found Jakoby Dixon on a tailback pass for a 12-yard touchdown. Bleu Cienega added the extra point to tie the game at 7-7.

PN-G re-took the lead on a 1-yard touchdown by Ashworth, which put the Indians up 14-7 with 6:08 to go until halftime.

Bleu Cienega cut into the PN-G lead with a 28-yard field goal, which made it a 14-10 game.

The Indians' next drive was cut short by the first of Tre'Lyn Kelly's two interceptions in the game. After that, Brenham scored on a four-yard run by Glover to give the Cubs their first lead of the game, 17-14.

PN-G had a chance for a field goal near the end of the first half, but it was deflected by Brenham.

The second half of the game was all Cubs. Ledrick Walker Jr. got it started by taking the first offensive play of the half and racing 68 yards to end zone to increase the Brenham lead to 24-14 at the 11:45 mark.

Later, Jakoby Dixon added a 26-yard touchdown run to make it 31-14 with 4:58 left in the third.

After Kelly's second interception, Glover sprinted 56 yards to paydirt with another Cub touchdown with 46 seconds left in the third quarter. That put the Cubs up 38-14.

Brenham would tack on one final touchdown in the fourth quarter as Roland Branch Jr. found Nate Rau on a 25-yard touchdown pass with 3:21 left in the game.

The Cubs' ground game finished with a combined 32 carries for 338 yards and 4 touchdowns.

The win was also the 699th in school history, and next week, they will be going for #700. The Cubs will be hosting the Bastrop Bears at 7pm at Cub Stadium. It is also Hall of Honor Night. KWHI will have live coverage beginning with the pregame at 6:30pm on 1280AM, 101.7FM, and KWHI.com.
