SALARY APPEAL MAKES ITS WAY TO COMMISSIONERS COURT

  

A salary appeal from the Sheriff’s Office made its way to the County Commissioners this morning (Tuesday).  The dispute had to do with Deputy Yolanda Marshall, who became a patrol deputy in 2016, but failed to receive her 3 percent increase in hourly pay after serving in that position for 90 days.  As a result, she is being paid 51 cents per hour less than those deputies who have received the 3 percent increase.  Sheriff Otto Hanak told the commissioners that he has made multiple requests to have Marshall’s pay adjusted, only to be denied each time.  Hanak said he was told the requests were outside county policy because the 90 days had already passed.  Most of the discussion centered around who had the responsibility to make the pay increase, the Sheriff or the county’s HR department. Hanak argued that he has too high of a turnover rate in his office to keep track of each employee's pay, and that the HR department should do it.  Commissioner Kirk Hanath agreed that Deputy Marshall should receive the 3 percent increase, but said it was the Sheriff’s responsibility to notify HR that the increase was due:
