AUSTIN CO. COMMISSIONERS LOOK AT MORE JAIL IMPROVEMENTS

Austin Co. Commissioners have asked the architects working on reconfigured plans for the Sheriff’s Office and County Jail to continue to develop the blueprint.

During a meeting last week, commissioners told architect Ken Burns they’d like to see more work included in the project.

Currently, the remodeling project would include a new layout for the sheriff’s office and jail facility, as well as a small court room for use by the Precinct-One Justice of the Peace as well as high-security arraignments and trials.

Commissioners told Burns they’d like to see the project also address problems with water leaks and mold.

Burns told commissioners that the new office would be 14,000 square feet and court rooms could be added on a second or third floor.

Burns said the addition work would add approximately $2.5-to-$3 million dollars to the expected $9.9-million dollar price tag for the current proposal.

County commissioners will continue to look into the project.
