Police in Navasota arrested a man accused of driving a stolen vehicle this (Wednesday) morning, but not before a short foot chase.

Cary Peterson
(Grimes Co. Jail)

32-year-old Cary Peterson of Madisonville was arrested just before 9 a.m.  According to Navasota Police Chief Shawn Myatt, the department received a report around 7:15 a.m. of a stolen U-Haul van out of Harris County, with Arizona license plates.

Officers stationed themselves on Highway 6, and located and stopped the van shortly after 8 a.m. on South Business Highway 6.  Myatt said the single occupant, identified as Peterson, bailed out of the vehicle, and a brief foot chase ensued.  Peterson ran into a wooded area nearby.

Due to the fog, K-9 units were deployed, and Peterson was found and taken into custody.  Myatt said “as soon as the dogs got close, he gave up”.

DPS and Grimes County authorities assisted Navasota police in the case, along with the Texas Department of Criminal Justice.

Peterson was taken to the Grimes County Jail, charged with Unauthorized Use of a Motor Vehicle, Evading on Foot, and seven out-of-county warrants.
