2019 RECAP: BURTON MAYOR DAVID ZAJICEK
As 2019 wraps up and 2020 begins, KWHI is asking Washington County elected officials what they think about the issues faced in 2019 by them and their administrations.
We continue with Burton Mayor David Zajicek, who spoke with us on what he believed were the city’s challenges and accomplishments throughout the year.
Zajicek said some of 2019’s biggest achievements for the City of Burton were the beginning of work at the city park and the opening of the bridge at Burton Street. He also mentioned the updating of several ordinances and passing of new ones to help improve the quality of life for Burton residents.
Some of the biggest challenges for Burton in 2019, according to Zajicek, were the ongoing road repairs and moving forward in the process of getting a backup water well. In addition, the city continues its search for a police officer, following the resignation of former officer Greg Rolling.
Heading into 2020, Zajicek said the city has received approval from TxDOT to lower the speed limit on Highway 290 through city limits to 65 miles per hour. He said that item will be on January’s agenda for the city council. In addition, he said he is excited about the MS 150 coming through town in May. He also said he expects the city to continue looking at new business prospects.
Zajicek has served as Burton mayor since 2017 when he defeated incumbent Peggy Felder, who had served as mayor for the past ten years and for a five year period in the 1990’s. Zajicek ran unopposed in May’s election.
