BRENHAM ISD SUPERINTENDENT RESPONDS TO ABBOTT’S CLOSURE OF SCHOOLS FOR 2019-20

Brenham ISD Superintendent Dr. Walter Jackson says he is “heartbroken” that students will not be able to return to campuses for the 2019-20 school year, but assures students will continue to receive services through the end of the scheduled school year.

Friday, Governor Greg Abbott announced the extension of the statewide suspension of normal school operations through the end of the school year.

In a letter sent out to parents Friday, Dr. Jackson says the suspension will also result in the cancellation of the district’s summer school program.  He says the district will continue to provide meal service and at-home learning through May 21st, the regularly scheduled last day of school.

Dr. Jackson says he knows many people have questions about at-home learning, modified grading guidelines, special programs, and senior celebrations like prom and graduation.  He says, while school facilities may be closed, the district and campus teams are working to get those with questions the answers they need as soon as possible.

Dr. Jackson says the COVID-19 outbreak has placed the Cub Nation family and the community in “an unprecedented moment in history”.  He says he has great pride in the ways the Brenham school community has responded over the last few weeks and will continue to respond in the days and weeks ahead, adding the “most valuable commodity at Brenham ISD has always been its people”.
