PRIMARY RUNOFF ELECTIONS SET FOR LEE, WALLER CO. SHERIFF

The primary runoff elections for a pair of area Sheriff’s races have been delayed into the summer.

The runoff elections for Lee and Waller County Sheriff, after initially being scheduled for May 26th, will now take place on July 14th.  Early voting will be held from July 6th to the 10th.

Lee County voters will take to the ballot box to make the final decision on who the county’s top new lawman will be.  In March’s primary election, retired DPS Major Casey Goetz and Fayette County Sheriff’s Detective Garrett Durrenberger received 1,182 and 1,151 votes respectively.  Fellow challenger and Lee County Sheriff’s Chief Deputy James Crockett received 592 votes.

The winner of the Republican primary runoff—Goetz or Durrenberger—will not have opposition in November, and will replace current Sheriff Rodney Meyer, who is not running for re-election after taking office in January 2009.

Meanwhile, for Waller County voters, July’s runoff will be a precursor to the final race in November against Democrat Cedric D. Watson, who previously ran and lost to current Republican Sheriff R. Glenn Smith in 2016.  Smith received 2,117 votes in March’s election, compared to challenger Troy Guidry, a trainer and instructor for the K9 and Mounted Patrol Divisions of the Harris County Sheriff’s Office, who received 2,235 votes.  Meanwhile, Dan Porter, a reserve at the Waller County Precinct Four Constable’s Office, received 657 votes.

The last day to register to vote for the primary runoff elections is June 15th, while the last day to apply for ballot by mail is July 3rd.
