STATE SAYS DISTRICTS SHOULD CONSIDER EXTENDED 2020-21 SCHOOL YEAR

The Texas Education Agency has laid out some options for the state’s school districts that choose to change their schedule for the upcoming school year.

Those include moving to a year-long school year, adding 30 days to the end of the school year, or giving longer breaks throughout the school year to help students catch up.

The recommendation comes amid growing uncertainty during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Officials maintain that the top concern should be the safety of all students, teachers, and staff.

  1. The tax payers are paying for education not sports, maybe the TEA should look at the education at BISD.

  2. If the school district extends the school year they need to pay the teachers more money as they are already under paid in my opinion.

  3. Teachers should then get an increase in salaries for the increase of the school year.

  4. As a parent I will not have my children go to a year round school. These children do not need that and they should not have to suffer because they only missed a few weeks of new instruction this school year. At the end of the school year all that is done is review for STAAR testing and field trips. They make it sound like the students missed months of learning and that is not true. Students need a break and so do the teachers. You cannot expect them to work year round and pay them the same measly pay they get. I’m sure the parents that will be for this are ones that want free daycare and expect everyone else to take care of their kids. School is not daycare people! This article does not say nearly the details on what TEA is suggesting. Look it up. I have read everything on this and it’s not as simple as it sounds.
