Mayor Toby Powell died Saturday at his home surrounded by family members.

The City of Conroe said in a statement that Powell, a lifelong resident of Conroe, “fought a valiant fight against cancer for the past several years”.  The city said, despite his personal pain, he led the city with “integrity, spirit, and determination”.

According to the city’s website, Powell served on the city council in 1977 and 1978, before serving again from 2008 to 2012.  He served as Mayor Pro-Tem from 2010 to 2012 before being elected mayor in 2016.

Sunday, Mayor Pro-Tem Duke Coon ordered flags to be lowered to half-staff at all city buildings and facilities in Powell’s honor.  They will remain at half-staff until Powell is laid to rest.  Funeral arrangements have not been released.
