The Department of Texas Veterans of Foreign Wars selected Heather Kaldis, a fourth grade English Language Arts teacher, as the state winner in the VFW Smart/Maher National Citizenship Education Teacher Program for 2020-21.

As the state winner, Kaldis’ entry will be sent to the National Headquarters for national judging.  She will also receive a $1,000 honorarium and a plaque recognizing her achievements at the 2021 Texas VFW Mid-Winter Conference in Corpus Christi.  The awards banquet is scheduled for Saturday, January 23rd, and will be held onboard the U.S.S. Lexington Aircraft Carrier.

Kaldis said she is “ecstatic and speechless” to have received the award, and that being selected among all of the educators in the state is “a real honor.”

Brenham Elementary School Principal Kim Rocka said Kaldis is “what every principal dreams about having as far as a teacher,” adding she “goes above and beyond every single day.”
