A former police chief for the City of Brenham and a local business owner has died.
Gary Buchanan, who served as chief of the Brenham Police Department from 1995 to 2005, and who was the owner of Buchanan Locksmith Services, died Sunday.
During Buchanan’s time as police chief, the department centralized communications and began dispatching public safety communications for all emergency service agencies within Brenham and Washington County. The department also installed a joint computer system with the Washington County Sheriff’s Office to share costs on computer technology.
In addition, Buchanan secured federal grant funding to begin a School Resource Officer program in Brenham ISD. He also reformatted the Citizens Police Academy, implemented a Citizens on Patrol program and started motorcycle and bike patrol divisions.
Funeral services are pending with Memorial Oaks Chapel.

Stephanie and Ty – Gary was a great man – a strong person who was kind and a blessing to many. He is now with God, at peace and without pain, watching down on you. Whatever I can for you, to help comfort and ease your pain, you know I am here for you.
