BURTON SCHOOL BOARD TO CALL BOND ELECTION MONDAY

The Burton School Board will consider officially calling a bond election for this November at its meeting Monday.

The proposed $43.8 million bond would include projects such as adding and renovating classrooms, renovation of fine arts facilities, cafeteria and kitchen upgrades, an enclosed connection for district buildings, athletic facility upgrades including a new competition gym and stadium, and various site and drainage improvements.

The board has performed a comprehensive facility assessment to research the age and condition of district facilities, and has analyzed growth patterns over the next five years.

If approved, the bond will be on the ballot for November 2nd.  Residents will need to register to vote by October 4th in order to participate in the election.

Burton ISD says it will provide voter education through all available channels to ensure that voters have information about the bond measure.  Residents are encouraged to check emails, mail, signs, social media and the district website for information.

Also on Monday, the board will consider the proposed tax rate to be published and the proposed budget for the 2021-22 school year.  It will also potentially set a public meeting date to discuss those two items.

Trustees will also consider:

  • A resolution retaining the law firms of Powell Law Group, LLP and Haynes & Boone, LLP to provide specialized legal services in connection with the issuance of public securities by the district.
  • An agreement designating Washington County extension agents as adjunct staff members.
  • The teacher appraisal calendar.
  • The employee and student handbooks.
  • An update to board policy referring to student activities.
  • A reading academy stipend.
  • District safety and security.

The board will meet Monday evening at 6 p.m. at the Burton ISD Administration Office.  The meeting is open to in-person attendance.  The public can also call in to listen to the meeting, using the information below.
